Deadline Sale

Business for Sale Description

SOLD BY ADRIAN | Iconic Country Pub Business for Sale Chatto Creek

For the first time in over 20 years the historic Chatto Creek Tavern is offered for sale; as a freehold going concern (FHGC) and complete with 2 donkeys!

In a prominent location just a few minutes out of Omakau, approx. 12 minutes drive from Alexandra and 80 minutes from Queenstown, the tavern sits alongside the popular Otago Central Rail Trail. It is a ‘compulsory stop’ for weary cyclists and with plenty of parking outside it is also popular with passing motorists and tourists. It is one of the only buildings left of old Chatto Creek and is the heart of its modern-day community.

The tavern was opened on December 24, 1886 as a stopping place for bullock and gold wagons. The distinctive ‘Central Otago architecture’ features stacked stone and 18-inch-thick mud bricks.

Oozing character, the Tavern was in 2013 named the best country hotel in the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence. It is the unofficial museum of the area, and the information centre. The bar has an extensive collection of historic artefacts and opens through to the spacious dining area and picturesque beer garden. On-site accommodation includes two double rooms and a bunk room (up to 10 guests) as well as campsites and motor-home parking.

Set on over 1.2 hectares of well-fenced land the Tavern is also ‘home’ to treasured artifacts, including the old Chatto Creek Post Office which was bought, relocated and restored by the community in 2004. The remains of the old Chatto Creek Gold Dredge lie out the back, between the tavern and the rail trail. Both the Post Office and the Dredge remain owned by the community. A bridge off the car park is listed with the British Transport Museum.

This is a once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity to acquire an iconic Central Otago ‘treasure’ with a business underpinned by the increasingly popular Otago Central Rail Trail and further growth potential.
